Ligaya is a deeply personal portrait I created in honor of my late mother. The piece is titled Ligaya, the Tagalog word for "joy," and it reflects the essence of the love and joy she brought into my life. The blue Baybayin script represents the words Ligaya, Gunita (which means "to remember"), and Busilak (meaning "pure").
Through this artwork, I wanted to pay tribute to her legacy—capturing the joy, the memories, and the purity that I carry with me. It's a celebration of her life and the emotional impact she continues to have on me, woven together with my cultural heritage.
In a Pampangan myth, Bathala (The Supreme Deity) went into slumber without leaving a will. Leaving his son and daughter, Apolaki (Sun deity) and Mayari (Moon deity), to fight over who would rule the earth.
Apolaki wanted to rule the earth alone, while Mayari insisted on equal rights. The two fought out the conflict until Mayari lost an eye. After Apolaki saw what he had done, he agreed to rule the earth together at different times. However, her light is dimmer than her brother's due to the loss of her eye.
